Assignment Period
  • At the end of each year; in the case of freshmen admitted in the second semester, at the end of the first semester.
(Details of the schedule will be released in the College of Social Sciences website: http://social.snu.ac.kr)

  • The one ‘Foundational Studies’ course will be excluded when calculating the student’s GPA; and in the case that the student took two or more ‘Foundational Studies’ courses, the one with the lowest grade will not be considered in GPA calculation.

Total Assigments
  • 77 people
Assignment Method
  • Those students who have not been assigned to a major in 2012 can apply for assignment of major in the following year, however, priority is given to the students who have been admitted in that year (in other words, the freshmen from 2013), thus those from 2012 can only apply to the major that have extra seats to be assigned after the 2013 students have been assigned to their chosen majors.
However, if there have been special issues that the student had to deal with – for instance, military enlistment, acute diseases, accidents, etc. – that led to the student withdrawing from school and re-entering at a later date to complete their second or third semesters, they will be given the same treatment as those applying for the major in the year they were admitted (thus, 2013 admits) as long as they present evidence of their special issues.
  • Admits within the Social Science field
    1) Choose their 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice, and 4th choice majors among the majors that have available seats and apply for their major assignment (the four choices should be different majors).
    2) Those who were not assigned majors even after following the procedure as described above will be asked to choose a major among those that have available seats.
  • Admits not included in the quota
    1) Foreigners, students who have completed all 12 years of their studies abroad, and special needs students are not included in the admits quota and are considered separately by the respective majors after the students have submitted their applications. (They are assigned their majors according to their choice and not included in the quota of the major)
    2) Students who have been admitted outside of the admit quota – like those from Special Admissions for Overseas Koreans, Basic Living Recipient Families, Lower Income Families, Farming or Fishing Villages, North Korean defectors – will be assigned to the major of their choice as long as they are above the major cutline (that is, the lowest average among the students assigned to the major). However, if the quota for the major (chosen by the student) has not yet been filled, the student will be immediately assigned to that major. (They are assigned their majors according to their choice and not included in the quota of the major)
Assignment Standard
  • Prioritize the average GPA when assigning their majors, but in the case of several students with the same GPAs, assign the majors according to their average grade from the major inquiry courses. If there are students with the same average in this step, assign both or all of them to the major.
  • Select students through the above procedure whose first choice is the major in question, and if there are extra seats left, use the same procedure to select students who chose the major as their second, third, and fourth choices, in that order.
Others
  • If a student has completed both ‘Theory of Political Science’ and ‘Theory of International Politics’ courses, only one of the two courses is acknowledged as a major inquiry course but in the case of a tie (grade) with another student, the grade that will be considered is an average of the two courses.
  • Special exams for freshman and seasonal session grades, grades from other domestic or overseas institutions, etc. are only considered when they have been approved by the academic affairs office within the application deadline.
  • Retaken courses are recognized based on the grades approved by the academic affairs office.
  • Other issues are decided by the departmental committee.
Others
  • ‘Theory of Political Science’ and ‘Theory of International Politics’ will be recognized as courses that count towards the major upon entering the major.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Social Sciences Administration Office(☏ (02)880-6306)
